On the 12th May 2018 the Emerging Proud campaign will be holding an event at Kingsley Hall in East London. This is located where the eminent British Psychiatrist R.D Laing conducted the Kingsley Hall experiment. This pioneering project helped revolutionise mental health theory and practice. The Kingsley Hall experiment helped influence future mental health residential home projects that shared this vision of a more humanistic way of working with people in mental and emotional distress, for example, Soteria House and Diabasis.
To follow in the footsteps of this progressive and compassionate approach to mental health care we are organising an Emerging Proud event. Emerging proud is an event to bring people together as a community of like-minded people who may or may not have felt understood or supported through their mental or emotional distress experiences. On this day we are validating the value of extreme states of human experience. In a way that promotes growth, courage, resilience and self-validation. To involve attendees to meet people who are standing up and courageously sharing their stories of mental/emotional crisis. People who have recovered and as a consequence been transformed by these experiences of post-traumatic growth.
We will have speakers such as Craig Lewis. A peer support specialist, writer, speaker and psychiatric survivor. After thirty years on psychiatric medication, he is living proof that things can change. The last 15 months of Craig’s life has been free of psychiatric medication. He is now freely touring the world as a speaker on mental health. Following his spiritual higher self, and has never looked back.
Natalie Tobert who is a medical anthropologist published researcher and author will be speaking. She has conducted original research in India that is documented in her text “Spiritual Psychiatries”.
Also, there will be an Emerging Proud film showing. This involved people from throughout the world sharing their extreme states of crisis and the transformative potential of these extreme states of consciousness. Showing that there is a way out and there is a depth and guidance of something almost mystical and transcendental in such sudden extreme states of consciousness.
We invite you to join us on the 12th of May, in our effort to destigmatise and normalise the validation of extreme states of human experience. Standing tall, with a sense of community and kinship; together, EmergingProud.
