Information for Volunteers
Thank you for offering to give your time as a volunteer at a ‘SoMe’ event.
‘SoMe’ is a way of organising events such as this and is a creative way to bring people together in face-to-face conversation, so those attending the event can learn from personal experiences that you are prepared to share with them.
In advance of the event, we need you to think about what elements of your own experience you are willing to share. At the bottom of the page you can download a SoMe profile to complete and it contains two elements: one is a space where you can summarise your experience in 140 characters (like a tweet, if you’re familiar with Twitter) and the other is a profile, enabling you to let people know a few things about yourself, such as hobbies/interests, favourite books, films etc. This is because we know that having things in common is more likely to encourage people to talk to someone else.
As you will see, the profile document has limited space and will only allow you to type 140 characters in the speech bubble and a few words in each of the profile boxes. This is to make it simpler for volunteers to complete, and easier for people at events to get a little bit of information about a volunteer they might like to talk to.
We have also provided you with an example of a completed SoMe profile page, which might help when you’re writing your own.
The important thing to remember is to only share information that you feel comfortable with. The purpose of the profile page is to encourage people to get involved and to talk about issues that you have experience of.
If you need any help completing your SoMe volunteer profile page, please feel free to contact the event organisers, who will be very happy to help.
